| | 1999 Antiyal (Maipo Valley, Chile) -- this unique red is a blend of 40% Carmenere, 30 Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Syrah, and is biodynamically produced by Alvaro Duran. It's a good wine to serve blind, because not many folks will likely guess the blend or origin of this. It's a big, forceful, fruit-driven wine that's very tasty, but kind of indistinct when you try to analyze it. There's lots of plum and vanilla on nose and in the mouth, but it's hard to get a handle on any nuances coming from this; there's some vague spicy/peppery sensations in the background. Medium-length finish. Nice wine, but not for the price (about C$55). App. 89 pts. | | | |
