| This wine has history with me...we ordered 2 cases of it for our wedding reception because the "house wines" were garbage...but I'll try to keep this as objective as possible.
I have (obviously) tasted this in the past and as I recall I selected it for it's smooth oak, nice cherry flavors, and medium tannins.
We recently tasted it (almost 2 years since the last taste), and found it to be a little "dumb". The color is fading a bit from deep red in the center to a slight brown tinge in the rim. The smell is of mild oak, cherries, leather and a bit of mint. The taste is why I buy this...the oak is perfection in my mind. Smooth, mild, and a beautiful frame for the other taste components. The oak is still there (and getting better), but the fruit is fading. There is a slight minerally quality that I can't pin down too. The tannins are still present and giving good structure. The finish is medium (the way I like it) and fades away with equal flavor dispersion.
Emotionally, I rate this wine at 91-92. Objectively, I give it 87-88. I use this as my model for how oak should be part of a red wine. The best part is the price: $10! It's a bargian!
By the way, the 1995 was equally well shaped, but alas I have run out. The $8 non-Oak Cask Cab Sauv., and $11 Malbec Oak Cask bottles are garbage...IMO. -Brett

| BV - this is "Trapiche", right? If it is, I must say I agree with you: their Malbec never convinced me (never above low 80s) and I thought they didn't make anything worthwhile. I never had their Oak Cask CS though and I might give it a try (but something a little younger... I don't think it has aging potencial).
They also have "top" wines: Iscay (merlot/malbec) and Medalla (cs), but I don't know if I'm willing to pay a much higher $$ for them.

Yeah...I spelled it wrong. It is spelled Trapiche! Oh well...you got the point.
I agree that these aren't made for aging. I'll probably finish the remaining bottles I have in the next few years or so.
