  • 2005 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Alta - Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Agrelo (8/13/2008)
Purchased of restaurant list, had them open upon arrival. Didn't take an extensive note but this wine made a nice impression. Deep purple in glass, aromas of black cherry, blackberries, and violets with a hint of minerals and earth. Medium to full bodied with black fruits and a great mineral laden spine. Really started to open after 45+ minutes.......but is still a baby and needs another 2-5 years.........however, it's still a beautiful drink, even in it's youth. This bottling really makes me appreciate Argentinean Malbec even more, it's such a nice marriage of both power and elegance, possessing chalky tannins and perfect acidity for a meal. But the fruit is certainly present and that's what makes this wine so appealing - it will work for both ends of the red wine tasting spectrum, the acid freaks and the fruit cocktail crowd. Those who fall in the middle will love it! 93+, as stated I think this can only improve.

And having this made wonder.....Why pay for much more expensive Bordeaux's when wines such as this are available? Just my opinion of course.... (93 pts.)
