Tasted twice with consistant notes. Very elegant, a baby Climens, beautiful honeysucle, slight lemon grass, and a deft touch of orange peel. Medium bodied and very fine, silky mouthfeel, and a nice long finish. Drink this when you can't bring yourself to open the Climens. 93-95 points.

Tis the season...to start pounding the Sauternes... First test, the known vs. the very unknown. 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey vs. 2001 Les Cypres de Climens. I knew the Cypres wouldn't last long when it got here, this is a must taste to see if one case will do. I thought I'd pair it against the Lafaurie which my earlier impression was baby Climens.
First whiffs showed little, barely honeysuckle. First sip showed promise, much fuller bodied that the Cypres, but instantly recongnized and remembered for its deftness.
With two hours mainly retiscent honeysuckle, but it is more prominent than when opened. A minor malt note, a touch of lightly toasted oak, macadamia, and acacia are all noticable. I called this medium bodied in February, but holy smokes you'd have to call crude oil medium bodied as well to stick with that reference point. Thick, like Kracher thick, didn't see that coming. Confectionaires sugar, cotton candy, apricot, pure honey, and a touch of Top Shelf Gin on the chewy palate. Balance is nearly perfect, but this has baby fat like you cannot believe at this point though with small sips you can sense the elegance that once was more prominent. The finish lasts for minutes, largely due to the fact that it takes a while for your saliva to actually cut through this stuff, though it stays pleasant. This is going to need some time now, try again 2010 to 2015, but 3/4 of a bottle says try again tomorrow night . 94-96 points on night one and easily 6 points up on the Cypres tonight.

I had a bottle of this last month, and to be honest, it was one of the best wines I have tasted. Top 5 wine of my life.
I cannot wait until my Climens and Rieussec come in December.

I only have 3 375s of this. Hmmm...me thinks when it finally shows up retail in these parts I might need to grab some more...a lot more.

Finished tonight. My oh my, this is good stuff. Didn't quite seem as viscous tonight, but it still showed lots of baby fat though it was elegant through and through. I roll my eyes when I say this, but I need more.....

Rothko graciously brought this jewel to the Boca off-line on Monday night. It was delicious and my main reaction was turning to MLV and repeating Honeysuckle over and over.

Actually the word peyraguey is french for honeysuckle.

Shockingly, we did not cover that in my 3 years of high school French, or in my brushing up before our trip to France in 2002.

FYI - I found some of these at Central Market for a reasonable price. They only had 750s at the time but apparently also had 375s.

I just picked up 6 750s today for $44 ea. They had no splits available.

I loved it at last week's offline. It's not the syrupy, viscous style, but rather a wine of almost perfect balance. I find some of the highest rated Sauternes to be a bit over the top, probably similar to the way some people feel about Australian Shiraz.
