I couldn't wait to open one of these guys and get me some edgjeecation on young, big vintage sauternes !
From 375, first night, light straw in color, fairly retiscent nose showing essence of lemon, white floral, and botritis on the nose. On entry this wine makes you sit up and take notice, not at the flavors, but of the mouthfeel. This must be one of, if not the silkiest liquids I've ever held in my mouth, velvet is too rough a discriptor. A cross between creamy and oiley is the closest I can come to put into words what this feels like, it is devine. I've never had a Premier Cru Sauternes this young and the flavors are quite backward at this point, very primary citrus, bracing acidity that really kicks in mid-palate and finish. At present the finish is actually more intense than the entry and mid-palate. If you remember that first taste of Yukon Jack when you were 16, how it blew fire out your nose after you swallowed is similar to how this wine acts, though it is much more pleasant ! It enters your mouth, is somewhat fruity, feels great, you swallow and this huge lemon and citrus essence charges through your olfactory, this finish lasts for minutes. This needs quite a bit of time to come together, but it sure seems like everything is there to make a great wine. The '96 version just came together in the last year and a half so I would expect this to take at least that long. 92-95 points being a very rough guess on this baby of a wine.

Stealth, I don't know how many of these you bought, but it would be interesting to see at what age you fell this wine peaks and how long it holds. I've done this with several Sauternes over the years, but never started with one quite this young. I find them ideal and 4 or 5 years after vintage date and they last for years. When the amber begins to show, I find them to be declining, although many people love them at that stage. Deep honey-gold is my color of choice as a maturity indicator.

Stealth - glad to hear you liked this. It's pretty darn good. Parker rated it at 93-95.

I just bought four bottles of this for $22 pb based on my buddy Chris Murray's review on the Parker board. Here is a link for anyone who is interested

I finished the last three ounces of my half tonight, actually still have a sip and a half left. It has lost some of the spectacular mouthfeel to slight oxidation, but it still is wonderful on the tongue, just not incredible as it was on opening. The nose and palate have become pure honeysuckle, very, very nice, I wonder if this is what it's like to be a bee ! I think I'll go fish for a few more of these, some 750s as well.

On retasting the wine shows more power than Climens or Lafaurie, but holds its ground as an excellent wine at least the equal of the Lafaurie. Glad I bought a bunch. 94+.

I had this twice last week. It's delicious, but so primary as to be nearly impossible to judge. I think it will be monumental, but right now it's just sweet, sticky and tons of fun (with much better acidity than I expected).

I just posted a thread on this a few minutes ago. I should have done a search first. I agree with the above assesments. I gave it 93+ pts.

2001 Chateau La Tour Blanche Sauternes

Tasted February 25, 2005 at an offline at The Wine Sellar & Brasserie in San Diego, CA so brief comments only. Purchased by the glass from the restaurant list. Served in Spiegelau Dessert glasses. Already a light gold color in the glass. Slightly tight nose of apricot, tropical fruit, etc... Flavors of lemon and honey but not overly sweet at this young age. Served a little cold so probably didn’t show as well as it could have. Good wine. Sit on this one for at least 4-5 years before trying again assuming you can keep your hands off of it. Recommended.

Had this again last night & it's essence of honeysuckle. Amazing wine that is my second favorite '01 Sauternes after Rieussec.
