| The wine to be sampled was the 2001 vintage of ALVEAR's young PX (you'll remember the 2000 got a whopping 95 points from a certain Bob Whatever?). Good news: the wine is on par with previous vintages, none of which I'd rate 95 but that's another story. Honey, quince jelly, dried apricots, raisins, a touch of coconut from the barrel, ultrasweet and equally dense but in balance for the style. Excellent sticky at a ridiculous price...
Paired with: Vanilla (and also yoghourt by the side) icecream with a spoonful of melted superb Valrhona chocolate over it...and another spoonful of young PX poured over too! Amazing. Horribly tasty in fact. Let the icecream soften a bit while the chocolate solidifies again... then add a dollop of PX and whisk a little with the spoon... | | | |

| LCC, it is available here. I don't think the 2001 has made it to our side of the pond but I purchased 6 bottles of the 2000 through my loving, caring wino buddies in Denver. I'd be willing to share a bottle with you in NYC on the 25th if you'd like me to bring a bottle. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. | |

| PJ's (isn't that John Roesch?) has them for $11 and Wine Library has them for $13.
Two of my favorite shops (Wine Exchange and High Desert Wines) have them for $12 and $13, respectively.

| Sorry, 2000. 2001 apparently hasn't hit this side of the Pond yet, as you also noted above.

| | 2001 Alvear Pedro Ximenex de Añada -- essence of golden raisins: raisin on the nose, sweet raisin and honey on the palate, a bit of caramel, very long raisin finish. Rather monotone in taste, but quite well balanced, with good acidity. Quite intense, though a clear step below the really great PX's. About 90 pts. I'm not sure whether vintage Sherries are intended for aging or not, but this one is ready to go tonight. Or tomorrow. | | | |
