RawRed had this bottle in his cellar for a long while... decided that his getting Married was a special enough occasion to pop this bad boy open.
Amazing nose of honey and apricot. On the palate, more honey and apricot with definite Vanilla notes. This is a very "bright and lively" Saurterne... not as thick and chewy as some of the higher number Krachers. This is instead very refreshing, rather than being overly rich. I think it has a great balance in this respect. The flavors are super lively and has very good complexity and balance. Hard for me to rate dessert wines... but definitely 95+. I really really enjoyed this. Thanks RawRed! | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... |

| Heyyyy, look @ my WOWs List. Nectar of the G-ds. Liquid Gold. 8th Wonder Of The World.
I had this same vintage last year. WOW. My 1st, & so far, last bottle of this. I was amazed by this Wine. So unique from anything else that I ever drank. And, that goes for all alcoholic beverages.

| That was a great wine. Lovely honeysuckle and light grapefruit flavors and noticeable but not overly strong Botrytis flavor.
damn yummy, IMO and a great pairing to the Kahlua-brushed chocolate with raspberry preserves wedding cake.
made sure all the persons at the wedding that would appreciate it at all had some, then gave about 1 oz to the head waiter and matre'd. They were excellent and appreciated a taste of such a fine wine and we'd already had our fill.

| Rawreds,
I know I am late to the game, but Congrats on your wedding. Glad you enjoyed the '88 d'Yquem. If I ever get married I will be partaking in a bottle of the 1959 d'Yquem. I suppose I should find the right woman first. Oh someday................
Cheers,
IW
Have you had the '90 d'Yquem recently? I am thinking of opening 1 of my 2 bottles this winter.

| Had this over the weekend.
Excellent and wow. Not 99 pts for me, but around 95+ points. At this point, does it matter though since it was a very, very, very enjoyable Sauternes. Not overly thick or sticky, but refreshing, lighter, and balanced. I would like to try this again in 15+ years. No need to rush this one.

| - 1988 Château d'Yquem - 375ml - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (5/20/2005)
I think that with a half hour in the decanter this could have been a 99+ wine. A wonderful with the Terrene of Foie gras at lunch today at the French Laundry. Huge boquet of apricots and lemon/orange citrus is a promise that is delightfully fullfilled on the pallette. Perfectly balanced with the perfect amount of acid (like no other Sauternes is) with a long pear finish. Absolutely delicious! (96 pts.)

| David,
I take it you liked the 88 better than the 90?

| lakersguy,
Yes. But in I think that the trifecta years Yquem put together, 1988, '89 and '90, are all equally fantastic. The '88 is drinking splendidly right now.
I don't know if the '90 is sleeping but I doubt it. I think I may have gotten some not-so-perfect half-bottles. I picked up a half-dozen at K&L a couple of years ago as my original supply was shrinking too fast. I have a feeling the pronenance on those bottles may not have been the best. This is the third 1990 half-bottle of mine I have had in the past 12 months that hasn't been up to standard imo..
