tasted January Sav Blanc tasting 17/01/2004

I was surprised to see this wine as high up as it was considering this tasting was blind. I have not normally enjoyed Wither Hill since 1999.

A very lightly coloured wine with classic passion Fruit and red capsicum. It was very pungent on teh nose and this followed through to the palate suggesting chilling might restrain it and bring it a little subtly. It certainly was a classic of the tasting with wonderful texture (something in retrospect all of the 2003s exhibited in contrast to previous vintages.), and good length and wonderful finish. It was interesting as the fruit so overt on the nose was certainly more restrained on the palate with more tropical fruit coming through. This sweetness suggested reasonable amounts of glycerol or Rs remaining in the wine. Still bloody good for savy. 94 points.

From Marlborough, NZ. Purchased for around $18.

Pale straw color. Aromas of pineapple, coriander and white flowers. Green apple and kiwi flavors. The midpalate had a strange texture to it, almost like it was coated with vinyl. Dull finish for an NZ sauvy. Lacking crispness, but fairly well-balanced. 86P

Cheers,

Otis

I tried this the other night. Although not unpleasant this wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Flavors were more tropical fruits, sweet pineapple. This was more plush and lacked the typical zing I love about NZ SB's. And at double what I normally pay for a NZ SB I wouldn't buy again. I would give 87pts.

Jeremy - I was wondering the same thing, you and I typically agree on the NZ SB's. You never know, could be poor shipping/storage conditions?

Could be..... Wither Hills was just sold to a Canadian alcohol company last year for an high price. Maybe inferior juice was used to seel overseas...seems silly though and bad marketing if it is the case.

A note about 2003 Sav Blanc from what I have seen. The acid seems less evident this vintage. Or so I thought. From comments i have heard the acid seems to be "dumb" or hiding this vintage for a period. Dunno why. I can't drink at the moment so I can't confirm nor deny this phenomenon.

Somebody on WS gave it 75 points. This prompted me to ignore it when I had an option on this or an Aussie Merlot/Cab that I can't remember the name of - it was nice. The option was a freebie from work.
