| A stalwart of Sav Blanc in NZ. This wine is the tier above the Private Bin and sits around the $20 NZD price point (so think around $12 USD). With a beautiful sunny day outside (still quite fresh though!) I thought it was time to open some sav blanc for the patrons to enjoy. I must admit I am not a fan of Sav Blanc but what the hey.....
Served at room temperature (probably a little warm at 18 degrees Celisus)in ISO's.
The colour has developed from when I first tried this wine twelve months ago. While that wine displayed almost water like lightness this wine has taken on a lovely straw green colour, with quite a heavy viscosity. The nose also has opened up well with far more intensity and complexity than previously displayed. Initially powerful capsicum (bell pepper) notes dominate but hints of goosebury and passionfruit show through. As the wine got more air, a noticeable phenol character came through along with a softer peach/melba like note. The phenol note seemed to be intermingled with some mineral hints that created a layered effect to the nose. Very unusual and intriguing. Forward acids and high alcohol seemed to dominate the palate with my mouth zinging for several moments after drinking. Initial lemon flavours hit the front of the palate and then a supporting hint of kiwi and persimon showed through particularly in the aftertaste. This wine is still quite intense and displaying great fruit and acid concentration. The acids are lush rather than drying and although the alcohol makes the wine very warm the two flavourols seem to intermingle creating a lovely invigorating palate expirience. Overall a good to excellent wine. 90 points.
And I stand by what I said this time last year. That increased tartaric acids in the 2002 vintage meant that the true complexity and flavours of the 2002 sav blancs would take about a year to come through. This wine last year only warranted a 86 from me and showed more simple one dimensional flavours of kiwi and passion fruit IMO.

| | Jeremy, I've had the Villa Maria regular bottling and the Private Bin and foundthem both amongst the worst NZ SBs I've ever had. Actually, I thought the regular bottling was better thann the Private Bin. | | | |

| Boardo, The Private Bin is their lower tier sav blanc. Regular bottling? I'm not sure what labels make it to your shores. I known there is a lower tier that is exported literally called the Sav Blanc, the Red and the Chardonnay. Is this what you are refering to?
The Cellar Selection has a golden label with Cellar Selection printed across the label.

| | I don't know for sure. My wife and I stoped in at Stew Leonard's Wines on our way to a party (We were early.). There was a NZ wine tasting going on. The guy who was doing the pouring poured us a Villa Maria SB, then poured us what he called the Villa Maria SB Reserve. | | | |

| | The Reserve has a black label. Is that what you were poured? The Reserve is usually from either Wairau Valley or Clifford Bay. Do either of these ring a bell? | | | |

| | I don't remember both labels, but one of them was a relatively plain tan, green, or brown. I was looking for the 1998 Lewelling Wight which I believe I bought there before, when one of the tasters corralled us and poured us the tastes. I wasn't at all impressed by the wines, but remember the name on the label was Villa Maria. I believe the regular bottling was about $9 and the reserve about $14. | | | |

| | That seems about right. Hmm. That is concerning. Villa Maria is normally pretty good stuff. The brown goldy label is probably the Cellar Selection. | | | |

| I just spoke to the rep from Villa Maria about your expirience. Shes going to follow it up with the US brand manager and get back to me. They were very concerned about your expirience (because the wines have received rave reviews in Decanter, WS and elsewhere.) and so will be following up what wines were served at Stew's and how they were served. They even mentioend the possibility of getting some other wines to YOU if something is highlighted to them that they should be avoiding.
Lets see what comes of it.
