This was a wine we first tasted in NZ during our trip there is 2003.  It impressed me then, and I was sad to learn that Akarua had no US distribution.  I was happy to find this vintage in the US.  The bottle is screwcap.  At $28, it was excellent QPR.

The label says the alcohol is 14.5%.  We did not notice this on either the nose or the palate.  The aromas were orginally dominated by barnyard funk.  This blew off and the aromas showed dark fruits and plums.  The palate is black cherries and chocolate with some mushroom.  The wine is medium weight with a nice balance and decent finish.  I will be drinking my remaining bottles over the next few years.

Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

A shame it is that there is no US distribution for a wine from a fine year for Central Otago. Other standouts from this vintage were Felton Road Block V and III.
