| Goldridge is the second tier wine of Matakana. Although this label is considered the second tier it is by no means a reflection on the quality produced. What it truely reflects is the grapes are sourced from vineyards not under Matakana Estate's label ie; they are contract grown.
Peter and Paul Vega (sons of Pat and Kevin) are the winemaking and viticultural team and this has shown through with the constant and regular success of these wonderfully crafted wines. The Matakana Estate series is without adoubt a star to watch. The Goldridge series is a good solid wine range with reasonable quanitity and also only two thrids of the price of the Matakana Series. Maree Vega runs the marketing domestically so it is afamily run affair.
The grapes for this wine were sourced from Hawkes Bay near to the Pacific Ocean allowing cooler coastal breeze. Tthe 2002 vintage was particularly kind to Hawkes Bay. The region had a summer which started cool and then just got hotter and hotter. This "Indian" summer was expirienced across NZ but the average temperatures were only hotter in Hawkes Bay in comparison to previous years. The effect was ripe fruit driven wines with high tartaric acis resulting in balanced but high alcohol wines.
This wine however was not fermented dry resulting in a resonable amount of residual sugar. If this had been fermented dry the wine would have been about 14.5%. The resulting wine was fermented to 12.8% alcohol leaving around 5 to 6 grams residual sugar. But with moderate to high acids and such full fruit the wine is more of an off dry style than a medium style.
I tasted this at room temperature in an XL5 ISO Glass. Colour: A hint of CO2 expression. peachy straw Nose: A light floral bouquet witha hint of kerosene and smokeyness.Lemon grass and melba notes also develope as the wine breathes. Soft sort of apple pie and cream character also evident. Palate:Initial sweetness obvious on the fore palate, the acids then pull the sweetness away to leave strong mid palate flavours. The finish is silky but the warmth of the wine is quite a surprise. Mid palate is slightly oily on second taste. Overall: A nice wine for the price ($18.50 NZD- $9.00 USD), QPR rating is a B- while my scoring on the Jeremy Scale is 84. I'm not sure if this is available in the US although according to all my information the US is listed as an Export Market. | | | |
