For you DaveMci, Allan Limers top red wine is a %100 syrah coming off terraced hills where the average daily soil temperature sits around 98 Farenheit. Consequently the iron rich soils here produce heavy ripe reds, with intense colour. Allan is concerned the wines will get over ripe and thus out of balance so he picks earlier than most other vineyards. Still the wine is every bit as good as those picked later (in fact often better.) 1998 was claimed as one of the best Hawkes Bay vintages ever and it does seem to be that way. This is a typical example of a 1998 Hawkes Bay Red tasted 2001 January Colour: Heavy matt red and purple Nose: spiced cherrys, leather, aniseed, a slight mineral note, floral violets Palate: Heavy palate weight, great rounded tannic characters with acids taking a back role. The flavour stays mainly to the back palate with the finish carrying the flavours lingeringly to the fore palate. It hangs around in the mouth for a while but the tannins although warm, dry the palate quite quickly. A very complex and developed wine. Overall: A powerhouse of a wine. A brilliant wine at $40 NZD 90 points even on the Jeremy Scale

I picked up one of the 1999's and have a couple more on hold. I hope to get to this over the weekend.
