On TJ and Killer B's request I thought some TN's woudl go down well. So I popped a bottle.

2000 was an okay vintage for Marlborough and produced some good fruit if the yields were dropped. A relatively mild and wet winter produced huge numbers of budds which meant that intense cropping was necessary. The downside was that the humididty carried through into summer and many vineyards had to fight the affect of botrytis. The good news is that the 2000 MArlborough dessert wines were stunning.

Due to the temperate winter the acid levels weren't really well achieved in 2000 harvest. Consequently most a younger drinking styles. The further one goes up the Awatere valley the less of a problem this becomes. Sadly Cloudy Bay is about as diomyterically (?) opposite from the Awatere valley as one can get. The good news is that they actually managed through canopy management to maintain acids throughout there sav blancs. Downside chardonnay doesn't react so well to canopy management so rumour has it the 2000 Chard was a little flabby and may not make the distance. We shall see.

Tasted in an ISO at room temperature (about 15 degrees celsius -its a little cooler today than I would like.)
Colour: Gold
Nose: Soft malo and lees influence scotchy characters. Fruit is definately melon and passionfruit with lighter vanilla hints (French oak influence I would say?) Charcoal is light suggesting lightly toasted or aged barrels. SOme slightly cheesy notes also, which float over the top of the other more intense aromas. This blew off after a few moments. Hints of confectionary flavours (that hard boiled lolly smell.)
Palate: It was a lie about the acids! They are certainly evident bolsturing the wine . In fact the acids dominate the palate. Noramlly this wine is all about texture and although it exhibits great textural moments, it needs age (say another two years at least!) The oak is sweeter on the palate dominating the fruit and mid palate with the sweeter charcoal notes. Finishes around the mid to fore palates and length is moderate lasting a few more moments than expected. I blame this one the acids. It is a warm wine.
Overall: A good wine with developement time. 90 points on the Jeremy Scale.

Many thanks for the notes, Jeremy. Looks like it might be worth a buy at the right price. I'll keep my eyes peeled, now.

You're both very welcome. I mean it was such a hard effort. Taking off the foil, pulling the cork... the strain, the pain and the....pleasure

Didn't cheat and look at Jeremy's notes and you can tell:

I wasn't supposed to be drinking this week but Lady KillerB picked up some tilapia fillets on the way home from work. You can't go having a nice dinner of tilapia on tomato, basil and olive pasta without a nice wine to go with it. I thought about the sav blanc but no, the Chardonnay had to be it.

Lightly chilled it has a nice, sunny colour and has a lovely swish in the glass - quite thick.

Nose is pleasant and lemony which goes through to the mouth as well. Tastes of lemon curd and honey in the mouth with a very soft texture. This is a lovely smooth wine that went perfectly with the fish. After taste is mildly bitter but very pleasant.

I've given up on points scoring for wines, I don't like it. However, this is a wonderful wine. I'd forgotten just how nice CB Chardonnay is, I won't forget again. Highly recommended and the best white wine I've had this year (OK so I've not had that many good ones but it beats the Chablis that I've had) - better than the Sav Blanc 2001 or 2002.

Hmm, I just saw some of this yesterday and was wondering if it was any good. Thanks for all of the TNs.
