Supposedly the 2002 NZ PNs contain some dynamite wines. I have tried unsuccessfully to obtain the Felton Road Block 5 whose lovely review is below in these posts. In general, it seems difficult on this coast to obtain 2002 NZ Pns of higher quality. Anyone else searching?

To be honest Dick,
Otago is a pretty smale producer and outside about five consistant producers (Felton Rd, Gibston Valley, Mt Difficulty, Carrick, Cornish Point) and some can do producers (Peregrine, Chard Farm, Olssens and one or three others) aim for those main labels and forget the others. The effort will reqarded two fold.

Canterbury is also wworht looking at two and Isabel Pinot has shown through as a stunner this last vintage.

Jeremy... another good reason to have you back. Our post traffic on Kiwi wines has been sorely lacking!!!

Jeremy....thank you for your input. I have been on a quest to obtain a representative Central Otago 2002 PN for a while. My research has located many producers, the goodies of whom do not leave NZ, Australia, or the United KIngdom. Some few have been available in California but the individual shops will not ship to me. However, I snagged a case of Rowland 2002 PN Jill's Vineyard from Martin's in New orleans last week @$29.99 per bottle and had the first one last night. I believe this to be not representative of the best of Central Otago in 2002 but nevertheless was a good bottle of pinot noir. Of limited production, approximately 150 cases, grown on 3 acres, this medium bodied wine had pleasurable cherry, currant and medium dark fruit bouquets and tastes. It had a pleasant lasting finish and is worth an 89 on my own personal scale. I will allow it to mature more in the bottle since I have 11 left.

FYI, wineseacher.com shows Martin Wine Cellar selling the 2002 Rowland Cellars Jill's Vineyard Pinot Noir for $23.99, might want to give them a call...

Jeremy:

What about the 02 Akarua or Neiudorf? I really liked them when we visited NZ in 03.

TIA

Pete

I have a problem getting the Otago wines here - seems that if you're outside London you can't appreciate wines, according to the cockney zealots. The only NZ PNs that I've got of are the obligatory CBs for 2002. Wasn't totally convinced (i.e. not at all) about the 2001 so have been looking for the Otagos to no avail.

I was in NZ in April and had the opportunity to taste some of the 2002 PN's mentioned in this string. In Nelson area, Neudorf was the best and one of the few wineries that had large bowl tasting glasses. Good chards too.

In Central Otago, liked Carrick and Peregrine the best during a 5 winery tasting tour out of Queenstown. In Queenstown, found a bottle of Felton Road Block 5, which I am still sitting on.

All told, brought back 4 bottles of Central Otago PN from the trip and haven't been able to find any on the East Coast. Glad I packed my bags. I've made some inquiries to the US importers listed by the NZ wineries, but I haven't been too successful. I don't think the importers are set up to deal with the consumers.

Found the Peregrine Central Otago PN at Sparrows in Hoboken (but I may have bought the last of their stock).

Gary's Wine in Madison just started stocking the 01. If he sells it hopefully he will be able to get the later vintages.
