Most of the discussion I've heard is "what wine do we pair with this food?"

Do you ever go the other direction (whether at home or out), and decide which wine you're going to have and then decide what food will go best with it?

All the time, especially when I'm doing the cooking at home. PURPLE tends to plan a meal and then pick the wines. I tend to pick the wines and plan a meal around them. Sometimes I do this while dining out if I see something on the wine list I'm exceptionally interested in.
Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

On many occasions Madame NCVL and myself will first pick out a wine and then plan a dinner around our wine selection. Almost always this involves cooking at home.

Frequently, virtually all the time. I usually have 6-12 bottles standing up and I see what's good in the market that will pair well with one of the wines. Sometimes, if I have a particular wine I must have that night, I will seek out food that goes well with it.

At home, what the market has that is good determines the wine. At a restaurant the roles are reversed, the most interesting/best deal on the winelist determines what dishes to order.

If we are planning a dinner party Tricia will throw out some ideas of what she wants to cook and I usually have a bottle of something that will go with it.

At wine dinners I plan at my club I always choose the wines first and then sit with the chef to determine the menu.

If I have an unusual wine and I want to take it to a restaurant I will call the chef at the restaurant a couple of days before. They are always willing to come up with a special dish for the wine I BYO.

But, Sheldon, it's so easy to find good wines at our local restaurants!

If you come up for a DC Crü event, we can rally the troops to make it a fun one. You never know, I may even show up!

I tend to pick the wines first as well, particularly with a strong wine list.

I went to the Culinary Institute for dinner a few years back and a good friend of mine asked me how it was. I went on and on about how good the wine was, the fairly extensive wine list, etc. etc.

When I finally finished (which can be some long time mind you....) he said, "I meant the food."

Priorities.
