No, but I have made his tomato sauce and various pasta sauces from recipes in his books. I like them

I've made his bolognese sauce and it was very nice. I saw the jarred stuff on zingermans.com and was curious. Some nights you just need a 15 minutes meal.

Then make a big batch and freeze portions in tupperware or large yogurt containers. Sauce from a jar? Not my cup of tea.

But, futronic, you'll miss all of those wonderful preservatives!

From scratch, the only way to go. So it takes a few hours, but realize the aroma in the kitchen while cooking.

Sorry guys. I like sauce from a jar better than fresh homeade sauce.

Yep, and I like Franzia better than Caymus.

We have some red pepper sauce with serano chiles, cilanrtro, etc. etc. that will make you throw that Ragu away in a heartbeat.

You also like beans in something called Canadian Chili so there you have it.

All kidding aside, BellaDonna, I would love to hear which jarred sauces you prefer. Maybe there are some out there that are good. Lord knows, no one on this board has tried them all. That said, I make my own and freeze it. I have spoiled my wife and daughter and they cannot eat jarred sauce. But it never hurts to have a well-stocked pantry of ready-to-eat food, especially when you have kids, and your kids' friends over the house. So far, I have found nothing that I would buy a second time. But I'm willing to try something new.

Beta testing a new signature.

I think that is nuts.

That said, I have a few bottles of the stuff in the cupboard for when I am feeling lazy. My problem is finding ones without HFCS in it.

Any tips on a good basic tomato sauce, homemade, would be universally welcome, BTW. hint hint y'all.

I've tried many jarred sauces from the $1 to $15 range.

Francis Coppola: blah, didn't taste like tomatos, very bland, where are the spices? Pass.

Napa Valley Bistro (or something like that): had more flavor than the Francis Coppola sauce but not much better. Pass

Ragu: you can taste the added perservatives and sugar. Pass

Classico: a step under the Ragu (can taste less sugar and perservatives) Not impressive. Not worth the calories per serving. Cheap tasting. Pass.

Alessi: authentic tasting, ingredients are simples (such as tomatoes, salt, basil, olvie oil -not exact ingredients, just an example). $3-4/small bottle. My preferred brand.

Dean and Deluca (Vodka sauce): nice, somewhat creamy, very good. Buy.

My secret recipe for pasta sauce.

I must warn you that this isn't that easy to prepare. I've never seen a lid on a jar that is this tight!

Is this another "west coast" product that I will never find in Texas as I do not recognize the brand Golden Grain?

I know it is available on line. But jeeeez, it wouldn't be worth it paying the shipping charges.

There is no length I wouldn't go to for good food or wine.
