I am having a debate with someone. Our debate is over chili. Does "real" chili have beans? (I don't know how to start a poll)

No. Real chili does not have beans.

Then eat them separately.

Chili without beans is just tomato sauce, spices, and ground meat (probably a few other things)

Debatable on the way you make chili.

What he said. But I like chilis with beans and without beans. So I guess I like chili and I also like faux chili (some anyway).

Agreed. It's the complete package that counts. Here in Columbus, we suffer with Cincinatti style chili: ground meat and other bits, brown water, and CINNAMON. Oh, did you know it's frequently poured over top of spaghetti? I'm never going to understand these Midwesterners that surround me.

FWIW, I like my chili to have cubed, not ground, beef.

Warning: Off-Topic

After moving to Temple, Texas from Florida in 1994, my family came to Texas for a visit. I took them down to San Antonio for the weekend, and on the first afternoon we wandered over to Dick's Last Resort on the Riverwalk and sat at a table. The waiter came over and asked what we wanted to drink, and I ordered a Lone Star beer. He looked at me and said: "Where are you from?" I replied: "Temple, about two hours north of here." He shook his head and said: "No self-respectin' Texan drinks Lone Star; they drink Shiner Bock."

So I said: "I'll have a Shiner Bock." And I haven't ordered a Lone Star since.

NO BEANS in chili!

But who says one can't put tomatoe sauce in the mix?

Chili is whatever one wants it to be. First the meat can be any beef or fowl (even vegitarian) one wants; buffalo, duck, pork, hamburger, venison...

The" liquid" can also be anything one wants also; tomatillo for a wonderful verde sauce, tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, chilis... in theory even beans.

The reason so many people believe there "should" be beans in chili is because the mass food market makes it that way. I'm sure that most people would be upset if they got a bowl of chili and it didn't have beans in it. It isn't wrong but it sure doesn't need beans to be chili.

My last trip to Fort Worth a few months back I was told the exact same thing.

I'd never heard of Shiner Bock.
