Can you believe this. PETA thinks we should stop eating fish because of the inhumane way we catch them.

"Have you ever seen a fish when it comes out of the water on a hook? They're gasping for air through their gills and the look in their eyes. They are definetly suffering".

Well, I'd be looking a little bit bug eyed and angry if I were hooked through my backbone and pulled out of my world as well. Give fish a chance. Hook him in the mouth when he is yawning at 5 am.

Fois Gras: I would be especially infuriatred if my liver was extracted without my permission.

I wish someone would just open up a PETA person's mouth, yank out thier incisors, and say " I guess you don't need these"

I HATE it when organizations that can do some good start pulling crap like this. There are legitimate arguments about certain types of animal testing. There are legitimate arguments about the way some animals, even those born to be eaten, are treated when alive. But when the organization is so wacko as to argue about FISHING(!?!?!) -- something which does not kill fish in any more an horrific manner than getting eaten alive by another fish AND which is obviously necessary for the human consumption of fish, which has a HUGE relationship with good cholesterol and average life expectancy -- how can we be expected to treat them seriously when they are making a fair argument?

I'm more concerned about overfishing and decimating fish stocks then I am about how a fish feels. From a former commercial fisherman these Peta folks can all move to Siberia and eat snow for all I care. Damn Hippies.

I have no idea if this is possible, but I would love to see a computer simulation, sort of like Sim City, that would project what the world would be like if every human stopped eating all the foods that PETA thinks we should not eat. I'd have to guess that with the number of underdeveloped cultures that survive (barely) with fish or other animals as their main source of protein, that much of the world would start to look like Ethiopia. Rampant malnutrition and starvation. And is there really enough soy milk to supplant the world's supply of animal milk? It seems to me that these PETA folks simply haven't thought through the "what ifs" very well. It might be fine to choose to eat "humanely" in the world's richest country. But try telling someone in the Sudan that their already restricted diet should be restricted even further. Talk about a moral dilemma. At some point, one must concede that humans are at the top of the food chain, and that saving the life of a cow at the expense of 10 human lives cannot be justified.

Beta testing a new signature.

Righty on, whiner. I definitely think some factory farming procedures are undesirable, but since when has living in the wild until a day when a predator kills you been inhumane? I saw a red-tailed hawk kill a dove yesterday at my bird feeder, I guess I should let these people know since it sure looked like the dove was suffering. Maybe they can euthanize all the hawks. Or maybe they can teach them to be vegetarians. I am sure these are the same people that feed their cats and dogs tofu.

The leadership and members of PETA really doesn't have a sense of priority do they? The mind set of people in this group just amazes me - it seems like for a lot of them it's the smallest bug over a human. I have a dear friend who is a die hard PETA wacko. Some of the things she says are UNBELIEVABLE. We had her over for dinner last week and I was telling a terrifying story of my toddler son stumbling on an underground yellowjacket nest. Obviously a scary time for us. At the end of the story she asked "Well what did you do to the nest?" To which i replied, "We dumped gasoline down it and destroyed them" She sighed a sad sigh, and seriously looked at me and asked "Couldn't you have moved the nest or something?" Luckily her husband quickly changed the subject.

Justawino-
First off is your son OK? I hope so, I've done the same as a kid and ended up getting seriously stung. The whole gasoline trick is awesome! I would not have been so nice if someone had told me I was cruel to yellow jackets after that experiance. They may have made it through dinner but they sure as hell wouldn't be allowed back in the house.

This is what happens when these nuts start winning some of their insane battles (such as the foie gras lunacy) ... it only encourages them to do more. PETA apologists and their fellow travellers only spur them on.

I now know what I am having for dinner tonight.

Thanks for your concern. Thank God, he only was stung twice and doesn't have any allergies. It was quite a sight both of us covered in yellow jackets ripping our clothes off and running into the house close to naked.

Part of me has thought if she had kids she wouldn't be so concerned about every living creature besides humans. But she once told me they have decided not to have kids because it would be unfair to their cats To each their own I guess...

I am still confused why the push against fish - I'm sorry but I am more concerned about PCBs and mercury in fish than the fishes "feelings". Though maybe next time I slurp an oyster on the half shell it will somehow give me an innocent expression and I'll change me mind - NOT!

There is a GREAT TJ joke here but I'm not even getting close to it! Except to mention that there is a great TJ joke here.

Do you suppose PETA understands what fish do in their natural habitat?

That's right, they eat other fish. I'd like to know what they propose to do about this horrible mistreatment?

Maybe we should start nuking the whales since they slaughter so many anchovies, to say nothing of krill. The poor krill, oh the horror.

I read somewhere today in the newspaper that some British researcher was able to detect plants "screaming" when cut. And no, it wasn't a joke. It was in regard to the PETA fish thing. I'll try and post the link.

Fish and Plants fee pain?

If the link doesn't work it is www.chicagotribune.com
And click on columnist John Kass. Very funny article
