| I'm surprised I didn't find a real TN on this wine..... though I did find someone who scored it 94 points, and parker scored it 93-95
Ruby/purple in color. What a sweet blackberry nose.... reminds me of Hiram Walker Blackberry brandy. :-) Palate is bursting out of blue and blackberry fruit, little black licorice, very well integrated oak. The balance of this wine is very well done... very smooth yet fresh (ie. low but OK acidity) with present but smooth tannins that are only a little drying. The only thing this wine lacks is complexity. It's as if the vines just aren't taking anything out of the terrior of McLaren Vale. I'd say that Colin Kay has gone as far as he can go with these grapes... they just need more time in ground, and perhaps not so much watering so the flavors and complexities can develop further. The finish is nice but quicker than I'd like with a slight oak aftertaste, also quick. I'm hoping this wine will develop with some more bottle age. I have five more and will try my next bottle in a year. If nothing happens, I'll probably drink em up. Very enjoyable, smooth wine...
Rev rates it: 91.. but time could really push this score up if the complexities develop. | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... |

| Hello
Terrific wine, nice notes, although I rate it a little higher perhaps.
To be fair, the wine retails for $AUD26 ($US about 20) so offers outstanding value for money.
I recently tried the 2002's from tank just prior to bottling, and they are a step up again.

| The price is more like $40 here. It would really be a great deal at $20. | | | |

| $20 US?? Not around here. We had this again on Saturday night with big fat cheeseburgers. The label reminds me of an old-fashioned pancake mix box. | | | |

Sorry for any confusion. As most of you know (disclosure for those who may not) I retail in Australia and the wine retails with me at $Aud26. This equates to $US20, hence my remark.
At that price I promote heavily and think its fantastic value. At $US40 the value is quite different. At $US40 I sell the Block 6 from Kays which is still, at that price point, fantastic value.

| Correct me if I’m wrong but the Amery Shiraz is different than the “Hillside” Shiraz. I don’t believe there is an Amery Hillside Shiraz from Kay Brothers. The Hillside for 2001 is excellent although I won’t be opening anymore for at least 3 years. I have not tasted the Amery. | | | |

| Lakersguy, there definitely is a Amery Shiraz.... but I wrote exactly what was on the bottle for the subject of this TN..... it says Amery Vineyards, Hillside Shiraz. I bought both, and the Block 6 actually. | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... | |

| Block 6 is running about $75-85 here Gavin. Just more gouging of us greedy Americans I guess. We are suckers for that good Aussie juice. | | | |

| The Amery Vineyards, Hillside Shiraz is the one with the "Aunt Jemima" label.
Does it really cost that much just to get it over here?

To some extent thats true. The Block Six retails here for $40 from the winery if you are on the mailing list. The US official importer pays the same price (less about 40% tax) which equates to A$24 or about US$18.25.
Even allowing for expenses, its not a bad profit, but then you guys are prepared to pay for it. In Oz we have more sense but then we are not as well off as you guys are financially. | | Cheers Ric www.torbwine.com

| Torb,
Who'd want to follow the irreverent rantings of "The Opinionated Red Bigot" (TORB) who takes nothing seriously except possibly the good plonk?
(To those who don't know why I said the above, go visit torb's website)
Seriously though, not all wines from Australia seem to be marked up that high. I'm beginning to think it's a better idea to ship big pallets of Aussie wine like Bressler does, rather than buy locally.
I'd love to have more Block 6 (100+yr old vines) in my cellar at that price. I wonder what one can get the shipping cost down to if shippin a large amount all at once. | | | If you drink wine, you get smarter....

Rev,
Over 1,000 people have read Chapter One of the Victorian Tour Diary in two weeks so there must be a load of very sick puppies out there.
Buying it locally and shipping it over is a good idea but you don't have to get pallets of the stuff to do it. There is a half way option, its called "Gavin" at Auswine. His prices are reasonable, he doesn't charge like Jessie James and his service is good. (For the record I have no association with him except being a satisfied customer.) | | Cheers Ric www.torbwine.com

| Hi
There are three Shiraz
Kays Amery Shiraz (which I thought we were discussing). $Aud26
Kays Amery Vineyards Hillside SHiraz $Aud37
Kays Amery Vineyards Block 6 Shiraz. $Aud60 ($40ish from cellar door, but unusually in Australia, retailers like myself must also pay the $40 for the Block 6, then add GST hence the higher price)
Three different wines and three different price points.

| I paid:
Amery $30 AU Hillside $40 AU Block Six $50 AU.
This included shipping. The exchange rate was $0.63US to $1AU. Should have bought a boat load......

| And to think I wondered if the Block 6 was a buy at $71.99. Even if it is a good US price (unknown), I will pass on principle. Too much other good wine out there.

| I just had two of these recently. I won't touch a Block 6 for many years. - 2001 Kay Brothers Shiraz Hillside Vineyard [McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia] 94 pts. (4/14/2004)
Wow, this is a nice step up from the Amery Shiraz. I popped and poured with no decanting, instead opting to enjoy two glasses very slowly and let them develop in the glass. I'm eager to see what the remaining 2/3-bottle does tomorrow. The nose shows woodsmoke, blueberry, some medicial smells of eucalyptus, pepper, soaring violet and blueberry. Lovely! However, the high point of this wine is the stunningly expansive entry, as this wine just fills your mouth and attacks every millimeter of your palate with dark, medicinal flavors intermingled with juicy blackberry, all layered over a very powerful structure and spiced with sweet American oak. This doesn't show the sweet attack of a Marquis Phillips, rather this shows lovely balance, brooding and power in a much more elegant and reserved way. However, this IS an Aussie after all, and compared to wines from other realms this certainly smacks you over the heads with a blast of fruit and structure and surprisingly lively acid.
The longer I sit with this wine, the more I enjoy it and the more complexity and length it reveals. This stuff really has serious depth to it. I can barely imagine what the Block 6 will be like when I eventually get around to that! DAY 2: This has smoothed out even more with a day of air and still shows very nice purity of fruit with much more integration of wood. I actually liked it more on day 1 than day 2, but it is lovely stuff, surprisingly lithe and powerful.
- 2001 Kay Brothers Shiraz Amery Vineyard [McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia] 91 pts. (3/17/2004)
This is a pretty delicious Shiraz that hit the spot. Raspberry moves to blackberry on the nose, very pure and powerful. On the palate this is very plush and powerful without being overbearing. In fact, it is refreshingly lithe compared to what I was expecting. More pure fruit envelops your palate along with some toasty oak and vanilla. This is quite monolithic right now, but I suspect it will open up overnight. DAY 2: Now we're talking. This has really rounded out to show some pepper, licorice and a hint of oak-induced mint. It has all of the elegance it did yesterday and more complexity. This frankly seems pretty restrained and closed, but it is awfully pure and tasty. I don't get all the way to 93-95 as RMP did, but it is an easy 91 points. Posted from CellarTracker!
