| Is it a 99pt RP wine? No, but I give it 95pts.
One of my local wine contacts told me he was getting 19 bottles of this and that I could have 5. The price is about 10% higher than the 2001 bottling.
This wine is a meal in itself. THe amount of glycerin and jammed peppery fruit in this wine is over the top. At 16% Alc. it is in many ways like a highly extracted Zin.
The finish on this wine lasts 45-60 seconds. IMHO this wine may become flabby after about 3-4 years in bottle. I think that the wine should be consumed before this happens. Others may disagree on the drinking window.
We decanted half the bottle and left the other half in the bottle. There is a noticable difference in the two, with the wine from the decanter being more floral. This wine is certainly not for everyone, but a worthwhile learning experience if you have never had a high alcohol heavily extracted shiraz from down under. 95 very happy pts.

| IW, did you steal my TN? hehe. You are absolutely right about the amounts of glycerin in this wine... but in my experience, it could be worth the wait for this to develop a little bit and let those glycerin levels seemingly go down. For me at least, wines with such high levels of glycerin seem to hide the REAL power behind it. It's as if there is a coating around the flavor particals.
The Pelissero Long Now was like that... now that the glycerin is seemingly gone, it's turned into a much more complex wine.
But it's true... this is so damn fruit forward, maybe it won't have much complexity anyway. | | If you drink wine, you get smarter....

| Board-O,
I have had the '01 and they are both equally impressive. I rated both of them 95pts. I had the '01 after consuming several other wines before it, and the next bottle of '01 I open will be on an evening where a large amount of wine is not consumed. I think that the '01 had a few more chocolate overtones than '02, and the '02 had more down under spice than the '01.
Rev,
I think that 12 months in bottle will reduce the amount of glycerin. But you have to admit that this wine is pure fun.

| | IW, oh absolutely... it sure is pure fun... but I think it'll get better in a year or two. But not too long! | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... | |

| Consumed last night 01/23/04. Opened 2 hours before decanting and consumed over the following 4.5 hours.
Strong Shiraz nose not easily mistaken, aromas of black currant, spice, anise, and acacia dominate. Full bodied this dark purple colored wine remains light on its feet. Intense fruits of the black and blue type are noticeable on the attack before giving way to spice, pepper, and vanilla oak that coat the palate. The alcohol (16%) is far to high even for this level of extraction giving the wine a slightly hot nose and finish - which lasts 35-40 seconds. Combine the alcohol content with the moderately-high levels of acidity and this wine is mildly harsh on the palate. Tannin structure is well hidden suggesting short term cellaring (2-5 years), but much beyond that and you may find the joy of this wine has faded. 92-93+
On another note I found the 2001 slightly better.2001 Shirvington Shiraz

| Well, my 1st bottle of this popular wine that is selling for $100.00+ on wine auction sites. And, Parker 99 points, correct?
Well, what can I say? - it did not have it. The bottle just did not have it @ all. Ojeffso made a good point, I believe, that sometimes with bottles such as these, if you give it a few years, they come together. A good point indeed.
Now, in comparison, I had the 02 Amon-Ra & while also young, & I thought that it needs time to really blossom, I found the Amon-Ra to be an excellent bottle of wine. All it needs is some more time, & it will be great.
This bottle did not show the same potentail or characteristics that it has the makings of a great bottle (as Amon-Ra showed). Thus, I am a little scared & skeptical what to do: keep/hold or sell, take the money & run.
A tough decision indeed when you can get $100.00 for this. A tough decision indeed, but I think I will hold & pay close attention to what people post in the future about it. I want to give this bottle the benefit of the doubt.

| My feet are numb. I guess it was good.
:-)
Well it's been almost a year.... Update: The glycerin levels have subsided, leaving this wine much more approachable after popping the cork. It is still a little bit hot, and a little bit acidic, but didn't bother me at all. I'm not sure this will be any sort of a long term ager.. I'm probably going to drink the rest of mine within the next two years, maybe leave one as an experiment.
Still lots of fun, and enough going on (complexity) to keep my really happy. :-) Rev 94 | | If you drink wine, you get smarter....

| | Inky purple, solid core, stained tears. Big concentrated nose, blueberry syrup, chocolate, mint and blackberry. Full bodied, big concentration, medium acidity and complexity with a long finish. Nutmeg, cinnamon, blueberry, blackberry, mint and blackfruits with a little heat. 90pts. | | | |

| This wine is not as good as it was a 1 1/2 years ago. Still plenty of fun, but the alcohol is quite forward as compared to the one I had last winter.

| | I agree IW. I opened a bottle of this about 3 weeks ago and it was showing heat from alcohol, and a complete lack of depth. Fun, but not a great bottle of wine IMO at this stage. I have one I will just hold for another time, but I do not see this wine becoming something great. | | | |

| Below are a couple of recent TNs on this wine. It is interesting to see the stages this one has gone through over the past couple of years.
If I had more of these I would drink up.
- 2002 Shirvington Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (8/19/2006)
This bottle showed a bit better than the previous one. It had some interesting graphite and white flower aromas and flavors. There was no apparent heat in this wine despite 16% alcohol. Good wine. (92 pts.)
- 2002 Shirvington Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (4/23/2006)
Central Texas Offline in Austin, TX (My home, Austin, Texas): Scored on quality but not to my taste. Lots of espresso tastes in this wine and decently complex. Syrupy. (92 pts.)
