With Parker raving about the 2002 Thorne-Clarke releases, when I saw this wine on a retail shelf in New Orleans for $8.99 I figured it was worth taking for a spin. Bright clear dark red in color, on the nose this wine presents itself quite well, with chocolate and brambly notes along with a good dollop of spicy oak that is quite pleasant. In the mouth, despite the wine initially showing just a bit ‘hot’, it performs well, delivering smooth ripe tannins and rather sharp acidity. As expected, this is a fruit driven wine and while not overly complex, it provides a fine value for the price. 88 points, drink over the next 2-3 years.

This is the same as the Thorn-Clark "Terra Barossa", right?

Thanks for the TN--I just bought 6 bottles for $8.99.

Sounds like an excellent everyday wine for $9.

The Terra Barossa is a level lower, Parker liked these also, but not as much.

The 2002 he raved about is released here in Australia now.

I'll have to revisit my last WA. For some reason, I didn't recall there being a regular shiraz between the "Shotfire" and the "Terra Barossa"--I thought they all had some sort of designation.

Thanks for the clarification.

This was the base level one that Parker reviewed. $8.99 is a pretty good price for drinkable shiraz.

The Shotfire is the premium level, the super premium being William Randell.

Below that, in Australia is the Sandpiper Range, and in the US the Terra Barossa.

The differences may be blurring, I believe the Terra Barossa may become available here soon, but ot his stage its not.

So its

Sandpiper/Terra Barossa

Shotfire

William Randell.

By the way, the 94 points and fuss over the 2002 Shotfire are true, its absolutely delicious, and selling very well here.

Thanks Gavin - I should be able to obtain a few of each of the Thorn-Clarke wines mentioned. Great pricing for hopefully some good wine.

So, to be clear, that WAS the Terra Barossa Shiraz that Eric tasted (as it was not the Shotfire or the William Randell).

Not to beat a dead horse but I just got confused by the two posts by Gavin.

mletson, I believe that is correct. Unfortunately we tasted this on a Wed. night - trash day is Thursday morning, so the bottle went out with the recycling and I didn't have it any longer to refer back to by the time you asked your question...

FYI - Here are the listings from the WA if this helps. They picked a tough naming scheme.

Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Milton Park 2002 - WA 89 points, suggested price $10
Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Terra Barossa 2002 - WA 90 points, suggested price $10
Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Shotfire Ridge 2002 - WA 94 points, suggested price $15
Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Shotfire Ridge Barossa Cuvee 2002 - WA 93 points, suggested price $15

The one I'm after is the Shotfire Ridge Shiraz but all of them sound interesting.
