Sorry for blatantly copying and pasting but:

Ok, so it is cheap and it has a screw cap - so what. £5 per bottle I hope to have something reasonable.

Unscrewed the cap with a sadness and a feeling that the experience was not as it should be. Poured a small amount into a tasting glass and took a good sniff. The only thing that I can say that it reminded me of was wine that you drink when you're 18. The colour was pale and interesting but it had a thinness that was disconcerting. OK, so I'm not happy so far.

Tasting the first sip took me on a Sam Beckett style Quantum Leap back to 1980 and the bottles of cheap plonk that we used to take to parties. I was now willing to write the whole bottle off and find something nice to drink.

However, I am nothing if not forgiving so I waited for a while - after all I had just opened the bottle. I was cooking up a smoked salmon pasta dish so gave it until then to sort itself out or the water re-processing plant was going to get it a few hours earlier than expected.

The smoked salmon was with mushrooms and basil in cream and good qualiity fusilli - black pepper sprinkled with gay abandon. All of a sudden the wine said 'hello' and proved what a good guy it had been all along. There was a hint of orange peel about it which was disconcerting but welcome. This helped with the general astringency and cut through the cream.

OK, so this isn't the greatest Riesling to come out of Australia and isn't the best thing from Peter Lehmann by a long way. However, it is new and worth a taste, especially at the price. I may buy again but will be careful to pair it with food. Not powerful enough for Thai food, I don't think. Not a wine to drink on its own, certainly.

I know there are Lehman drinkers on this site so I thought it best to bring it here as well.

I've never tried any Peter Lehmann whites. Thanks for the notes you British-Cat-Dude.

I have been to the winery and seen some strange looking bottles but I try to ignore them and hope they go away.
Cheers Ric
