  • 2004 Samuel's Gorge Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (3/14/2008)
Opened but not decanted, and consumed over 3 hours. Typical shiraz coloring, a bit (only a bit) heavy on graphite and chalk early in the drinking period, but those components softened considerably within 75 minutes. Black and blue fruit aromas, well-integrated fruit and pleasantly approachable but still evident tannic backbone provides a very approachable mouthfeel. Great drinker over the coming 3-5+ years, and doesn't require the excessive decanting that many well-pedigreed aussie shiraz' require.

During our recent Aussie trip, this property was on the short-list of favorite stops (along with Two Hands, Kay Bros Amery, and Mitolo) and was clearly our favorite "new find."  Limited US availability @ 35-45/bttl.  Their grenache and tempranillo also impressed us highly during our tasting. (92 pts.)
