D'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie 94%Shiraz / 6% Viognier 2005.
93RP

I took this to Corduroy in Washinton, DC for Valentine's Day dinner. The wine performed very well for the occasion. It's a sensuous wine that delivers so nicely on the nose. Not as profound as various other Aussie bombs (CoL), the wine was refreshing in its simplistic purity. It had a very feminine quality in its interwoven structure. Soft tannins out of the bottle, so it wasn't so bad that it wasn't decanted prior to arriving. Parker hit the nail on the head, calling it a sensuous mix of ripe blackberries and creme de casis. A light hint of eucalyptus but not near the extent or nuance of more expensive contemporaries.

A delightful wine for the evening soiree. My date adored it

93pts just because it was Valentine's day

  • 2005 d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz-Viognier - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (3/22/2007)
Tasted at a retail tasting. I have been wanting to taste this wine for some time, as I have heard/read many good things about it. Very funky nose. Did someone just peel out of the parking lot? Very strong tar aromas, which kind of surprised me given the viognier. On the palate, blackberry fruit, pain grillé, and Kalamata olives. Meaty and full bodied. Tart grapefruit on the finish. A decent and interesting wine, but IMO nowhere near the 93 Parker gave it. 87-88 points. (87 pts.)

Just saw this go on sale for under $20... and RP93 to boot? Based on your TN I'll try one before buying a few... Thanks for the note!
