Purchased at Gary's Wine for $44 (which is a ripoff compared to many other wine-searcher locations). Decanted for 1.5 hours prior to first taste.

At its price point, the Mitolo was quite interesting. It showed excellent fruit (go figure, it's Australian) and enticing aromatics with pretty good balance and richness. Unfortunately, even at 14.5%, the alcohol peeked through a bit more than it should. If the fruit richness and length had been more pronounced (vs the alcohol), it would have been a gorgeous wine. This is probably worth a gamble for me to lay a few down - it may be a knockout wine in 5+ years.

All in all, an enjoyable wine that would please everyone in a crowd. Worth the 'regular' price in the high $30s. I don't think it's worth 95 points, but it's definitely between 90 and 95 (I'm not real fond of scoring any more).

Please note - I'm getting more picky about alcohol than in the past, so there's a chance you may not be as bothered about the alcohol in this wine. It wasn't *hot* per se, but it was noticeable.

Thanks for the notes on this. Can you compare it to the ‘04? I thought the ‘04 was an incredible wine for the price.

Of Glaetzer’s ‘05 wines, I think I’ll probably focus on the Amon Ra.

Unfortuately I can't. I've only had the 2001 (which I adored) prior to this.

I used to work for a distributor that sold the Epicurean lineup and GAM was my favorite wine in the portfolio. I recall being impressed with a texture that I can best describe as polished. There were even some Northern Rhone like characteristics that I seldom find in Shiraz.

  • 2005 Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M. - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (3/9/2007)
Decanted for about three hours prior to first taste. Decanted deep plum-black coloring, but not as syrupy as many young shiraz. Cigar and faint blueberry on the nose. Had strong alcohol early on, which diminished during the 2 hour drinking window after the 3hr. decant. Great fruit, a hint of tar, cedar and a little sweetness - also stronger early on, and fading (but not disappearing) over time. The sweetness gives it a faint port-like quality, but not to the extent that it'd disappoint you with a steak (tonites meal) or something else hearty and heavy. Very approachable today, at least with the air we allowed, and should last for many years to come. A definate buy at the $39 I typically see it for locally. (93 pts.)

As for GreenDrazi's comment, I found this far more approachable at this point than the 2004, which I couldn't rate as it seemed too disjointed.
