2002 Marquis Philips Shiraz - Australia, South Eastern (7/14/2006)

Tasted July 14, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Riedel Vinum Cabernet glass. Dark purple to crimson color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of cocoa, blueberry, pepper, a mix of spices and potpourri. Flavors of black licorice, dark chocolate and a little blueberry. Medium acidity with still firm tannins. Running a little hot on the alcohol. Medium bodied. Still slightly disjointed in my opinion. If drinking now plan on some time in decanter. No value recommendation. (88 pts.)

Tasted September 16, 2006 at home. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Slightly subdued nose from previous tastings consisting of light notes of cocoa powder, blueberries and black pepper. Weak flavors of black bitter chocolate, black currants and bitters. High acidity, chewy/oaky tannins and a medium body. Alcohol is high. I don’t know if it was the wine (off bottle, declining, whatever), me, the wine needed decanting, whatever…the acidity and alcohol were so out of whack (and the fruit so lacking) that I felt like the wine was giving me heartburn with every sip. I finally had to put the glass down and give up, I couldn’t take it any longer. The last bottle we had in July wasn’t near this bad. I’m being generous and giving this thing 80 points on the outside chance it was a bad bottle but if I open my next one and it is as equally bad I’ll rip it a new one. (80 pts.)
