2003 Henschke Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre “Johann’s Garden”. Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia. 15.2% alcohol. $35.
A purple red color with scents of plum, some spice, and macerated strawberries with a butterscotch overtone. Smooth textured with ample fruit and light tannin. Acceptable acidity. Finishes quicker than expected. The 2003 is a bit of a let down after the impressive performance by the 2002. 73% Grenache, 17% Shiraz, and 10% Mourvèdre from dry farmed bush vines the majority of which hail from a 70-year old vineyard. Drink now to 2010. 88 points.
