2002 Henschke Grenache Mourvèdre Shiraz “Johann’s Garden”. Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia. 15.6% alcohol. $40.
A deep purple red hued wine with sweet, syrupy black fruits, roasted earth, licorice, and peppery spice aromas. Rich and mouth filling fruit flavors with more than enough balancing acidity. Tannins build up significantly over time but on balance are unobjectionable. Good length. 65% Grenache, 22% Mourvèdre and 13% Shiraz from dry farmed bush vines the majority of which hail from a 70-year old vineyard. Drink now to 2012. 92+ points.
