Tasted May 16, 2006 at home. Stelvin enclosure. Opened the evening before, poured one small glass, resealed and placed back in the cellar until this evening. Served in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of blueberry, blackberry, smoke, melted red licorice, a touch of white pepper and maybe some cocoa or coconut; couldn’t quite make it out. Flavors of red currants, black cherries, red berries and red licorice. Slightly tart acidity, firm to aggressive tannins. Needs extended decant time right now (probably not overnight like I experimented) or another year or so in the bottle. I’m a little concerned whether the acidity and tannins will resolve themselves. Based on the $14.44 per bottle I paid at local retail I’d still say the value is acceptable, maybe better. (88 pts.)
