  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Lily's Garden - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (4/23/2006)
    WIML93,NOWA,WS94

Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of roasted coffee, blueberries, smoke and mocha. Flavors of blueberry, black berries, mocha and black currants. Still pretty young I’d hold for two more years before opening again myself. At an estimated price per bottle close to $40.00 a bottle I’d say the value is definitely agreeable, perhaps recommended. (93 pts.)

Scored on quality but not to my palate these days. It seemed syrupy and jammy to me but again it's a preference issue. (91 pts.)

at the risk of being controversial, another tasting note reflecting Mr Parker's influence...

Not sure I understand Bob. Can you clarify?

This is generalizing an awful lot, but I find many of the 03 and 04 Shiraz to be bigger and jammier than their counterparts from 01 and 02. Is there any chance that RMPs high scores to that style wine have any influence here? I guess the answer could be - no it is just the grapes. But, I wonder...

Are you saying his reviews are effecting tasting notes of others such as the one I posted or what people are buying or what they like? I'm exceptionally thick today.

Not that I wish to speak for Bob, but I think with reference to Winetex's comment about this wine being "syrupy and jammy" Bob's suggesting that this wine is being made in that style in hope of meeting Parker's criteria for getting a high score from him, moreso in the last two vintages than in the previous two. I thought it was pretty clear.

I've had days MUCH thicker than that, Joe.

It's a bit of a chicken and egg question but there is no denying that to sell the wines a big Parker score is desirable. Therefore wouldn't you make the wines in a fashion that Parker would like?

With regard to this wine - I thought Two Hands made a different sort of wine and was a little surprised by the syrupy texture and jammy flavors.

I really hope that the answer to this is "no, not for that reason". But, you guys will have to tell me.

Of course that's the right answer (no, not for that reason) but I suspect not all wine producers would see it that way. No worries from your winery.
