I should say I love Clarendon Hills syrah. However, I've had a few of their recent grenaches in blind tastings and have been woefully disappointed.
Open this last night. Color very deep red/purple. Nose like sweet oaky cough syrup. Unfortunately, it tasted like sweet, oaky cough syrup. Full-bodied with a long finish, the taste was just not to my liking at all. Very, very medicinal with a cloying sweetness that I guess I just don't appreciate in dry red wines. Unchanged with gyros dinner and over the four hours we drank it, so I'm guessing it has a good life ahead of it, but I don't see it evolving away from that unpleasant taste as the tannins were mild and unobtrusive already.
Personal score: 78. Perhaps others will like this style of grenache better.
