| I let this breathe for an hour or so before drinking. A rich, full nose with hints of coffee bean, malty oak and lead pencil over blackberry and olives. An interesting, complex palate with fresh, concentrated blackfruits over dark chocolate and ripe/slightly chalky tannins. I picked up a case of these recently for approx $25 based on the Parker 95pt rating. I cracked one open (literally as its a screw top) and drank over two evenings. Agree with you crushed blackberry nose with the dark choclate blackberry flavors. Firm tannins and very concentrated powerful flavors. This was soft, sweet and overoaked like many shiraz. It wil be interesting as it seems built to age but not sure what impact the screw top will have on the aging. I didn't quite see 95 pts maybe 92 for me but still a screaming bargain IMO. | | | |

The answer to that question is very simple. If the wine is over oaked, as the fruit fades, the oak will become more predominant and it will turn nasty overtime. If however there is enough fruit to sop up the oak, the wine will become very good with time. As far as the impact of the screw cap closure is concerned, assuming the wine has been properly made, all the screw cap will do is to retard the ageing process and keep the wine fresher for longer.
FWIW here is my take on this wine.
Oliverhill 2004 Jimmy Section Shiraz October 05
A big, brooding fruit driven nose; with some candied characters, loads of smoky cedar oak, and milk chocolate. Smooth, dusty tannins combine with deep fruit and youthful acid to form a muscular-weight, firm wine with a solid structure and an agreeable complexity. A very savoury black flavoured wine with pepper, blackcurrant and toasted oak which currently overshadows the fruit. It will be better with time as there is enough to deeply seated fruit to absorb the oak influence. Showing a little alcoholic warmth, it is rated as Recommended with *** for value and the rating should improve as the wine matures.
After this tasting note had been completed, I actually drank the wine with dinner. After 7 hours of airtime, the oak had subsided and given way to the rising fruit; as a result it was much more enjoyable, even though it was still tight and a little unyielding. | Torb - I have had a couple more and agree this wine definitely has the stuffing and each time has been better on day 2 which indicates to me it will age nicely. I actually had a typo in previous post I meant to say "it wasNOT .........". I found as did you that the intensity of the fruit was more than ample to support the oak that was there. I apologize to all for the confusion made by this typo (maybe should learn not to drink and type). My question around aging were strictly related to the screwtop as I have no experience with aging wines with a screwtop. I love them for ensuring fresh uncorked wines that are ready to drink and sure does make both opening and resealing easy. I know they have been using them longer over there so will trust your judgement as to the aging affect.
This is a screaming bargain at the price although I suspect would be difficult to find at the mid $25-$28 paid, a quick search shows it now between $35-$40. | | | |

| Opened another tonight. Man this is a nice wine, but it really needs air or time the flavors are so big an concentrated but a bit tight. I am glad I have a bunch left and will either age or try to decant the rest. 91pts tonight. | | | |

| 2004 Oliverhill Shiraz Jimmy Section - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (2/25/2007) Very balanced with clean and refreshing flavors of wild berry, cola, pepper and wood. There is a very pleasing contrast between fruit and acid. Medium-full bodied. Drinking well now. Nice. (90 pts.) Posted from CellarTracker | | | |
