  • 2002 Noon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve - Australia, South Australia, Langhorne Creek (1/2/2006)

Dark, cloudy purple in color with a reddish rim. Lots of blackberry, vanilla and mint throughout. I think we probably opened this wine too young but it was a singleton. It only faintly resembled Cabernet but did have impressive concentration. It seemed completely overoaked to me but this is probably a stylistic preference on my part. [Decanted about one hour and needed every minute; Hold on these bottles for a few years and hope for improvement] (90 pts.)

Winetex,

It ahs been said there is no such thing as a wine that is over oaked; just wines that are under fruited. In the case of Noons, considering the huge amount of fruit in the wine, it can manage a hauge amount of oak. As you said, it may be just that this style is not your thing, but the wine is in balance and in 4+ years time should look a whole lot better; even though it will still be a huge beast.

When the oak is abusive to the palate then it's over-oaked. Sometimes it improves and sometimes not depending on the wine. There's definitely room for improvement with this wine.

I agree with you that the wine is in balance as the alcohol didn't club us in the head. We were able to walk away from the table.

Your wine might be over-oaked if: you find splinters in your tongue.

Nope! It just means you just have to stop licking out barrels.
