Tasted at the Victorville get together on 4/19/03.

2001 Oliver Hill Shiraz, Jimmy Section, McLaren Vale; A ripper! Dark and dense, lip-smacking fruit of concentrated blackberry jam, notes of bacon fat, and exotic wood spices. HDW 92 $29.99

My rating 93 points, and a close runner up for red WOTN for me. Absolutely delicious wine. Picked up one bottle of this, but will be ordering more from Glen. Went for breadth on this shopping trip, instead of depth, but this is definitely one for which a reorder is pending.

Where are you going to get this? Not an easy find.

Do you have a recommended "drink" window? I have 2 of these and don't want to waste them.

LCC:

Available from Glen at High Desert Wine, I think $29.99 each. Not sure how many he has left, but leave some for me! 877-977-WINE. I may be able to pick it up on Friday for you, would get it to you later.

mdriver: If you prefer the up front fruit, you can drink it now. I will check with Glen to see how long he had it open. Might be better in 2-3 years though.

These guys turn out consistently good wine right across the boards. I am always impressed with what they are doing when I taste their wine at the winery, but for some ^%$#ing reason I don't have any in my cellar.

Possibly because they are normally the first winery I visit on my annual trip to SA I don't want to rush in and buy anything, more fool me.

I've had three bottles now and this stuff blows me away. Will only get better with a couple of years in the cellar. Have purchased three cases from Australia. Shared half of it with friends, unfortunately.

This is a very rich and bold wine. Copious amounts of dark fruits and Chocolate cordial cherry flavors. I would'nt age this for too long (2-5 years), and for that fact why age it much at all. This wine is built for drinking now. Very tasty @ 91 points.

Dagnabit, who is "another guy from the east" who bought the rest of these from Glen before I had a chance to get more?

I can only claim one case, and that being one of the original two (along with HDW).

I think DaveL is in for three cases, maybe that's who you're looking for?
Cheers, y'all

Medium-dark purple colour to violet rim. Cherry, cassis, and a bit hot on the nose. Spicy, full-bodied, concentrated wine with cassis and dark crushed fruit and a solid finish. 90 points.

From the Gabrielle's Party in New Orleans, Friday Night:

Excellent nose, showing nice plum, spice, and pepper notes. On the palate the acid seems just a touch out of balance (high), and it’s a bit ‘hot’. A little time in the bottle should improve this marginally, but for now it’s a solid 90 points.

Speaking as the friend from down under, I have the 2002 of this wine here for tasting this week.

Also magnums of the 2001 are a possibility.

BTW The 2002 is under stelvin (screw cap) as well as cork, your choice.

Stelvin for me!

I am not Gavin but I tried the 2002 Jimmy Shiraz at the winery in May.

Oliverhill 2002 Shiraz will sell for $25 to $30 when it is released later this year. It was completed two weeks ago and shows very bright dark purple fruit that stains the glass. Its locked up tighter than a chastity belt at the moment so you can’t see much but the youthful concentrated obvious distinct fruit is evident, as is the high alcohol which surprisingly is not hot. Its muscular weight; the tannins are velvety and ultra fine grained and provide a great mouth feel and when you consider the addition of an almost seamless structure you can appreciate this wines appeal. Hard to rate at this point and I would like to taste it again later but probably Highly Recommended with **** for value based on its slurp ooze ability.

They have decided for this year and onwards not to release these wines in Australia.

I tasted last vintage with a friend who is on the mailing list. This year they say all for export none for here in Australia.

Needless to say, he is not very impressed!

Gavin,

That sucks! What's the reasoning behind that decision? Wouldn't be 'greed', would it?
