Tasted Tuesday 14th September 2004

1993 Peter Lehmann Reserve Riesling
Lovely wine...toasty, lemon sherbet, grassy, lanolin and kero characters on the nose and palate...fantastic mouthfeel ....not a bad show record either...32 trophies and 47 golds ..93 Points

1984 Seppelts Maturation Release Riesling
From a single grower and made at Great Western by Ian McKenzie....super complex kero, grass, citrus fruit, lemongrass, lanolin...fantastic length and a nice sour acid profile 94+ Points

1979 Heggies Vineyard Riesling
The first commercial release of this wine boasting 25 years under screwcap.....citrus and lemon sherbety fruit, kero, grassy....restrained feels llike someone is pulling back on the reins....nice sour acidity..very nice wine 92 Points

1968 Orlando Steingarten Riesling
Recorked in the mid-'70's....lovely nose, toasty, grass, hay, lemon sherbet, dried herbs and kero...lovely barley sugar character on the long finish....92 Points

1956 Yalumba Riesling
Steely, limey subdued citrus fruit, barley sugar and a bit of a madierised stuff happening.....84 Points

1942 Yalumba Riesling
Nobody is sure if this is all riesling....could be a bit of pedro or semillon in the mix.....a bit madierised, fishy more acid but the fruit has dried out a bit.....Len Evans reckons he's not going to buy a case......80 Points

1934 Yalumba Riesling
Although this wine is drying out a bit it was complex and bloody good, toffee, barley sugar, walnut, kero, toast.....multi-layered and very good.....94 Points

1978 Henschke Hill of Grace
A bit whiffy this one.....the first H.O.G. made under Stephen Henschke's control. blackcurrants, prunes, leather, cigar but some horsey stuff going on.....88 Points....kinda expected a bit more

1962 Penfolds Bin 60A
Brick red with fantastic focus. Lovely nose.....leathery, meaty aromas, fruitcake, blackcurrants, savoury, soft spice....these flavours also manifest themselves on the palate. Superb balance...and long finish.........97 Points.......a second botle drunk with lunch didn't show as well as the first one.....just lacked a bit of fruit but still lovely stuff.

1958 Seaview Claret
From the Ben Chaffey era at Seaview. Dry grown Cabernet from elevated, terraced vineyards. Very savoury, blackcurrants, leather, coffee and chocolate with hints of spice.....lovely soft subdued complex fruit.......93+ Points

1955 Yalumba Galway Claret
From halve bottles......fruit sourced from McLaren Vale......blackcurrants, redcurrants, spice, mushroomy stuff, chocolate, leather.....still a bit of fruit chugging along...quite remarkable for a half bottle.....91 Points

1944 Mt Pleasant Henry Claret
One of a series of 1940's wines made by Maurice O'Shea.....super smoky and leathery on the nose, fruit-cake, leather, chocolate, spice and wood smoke on the palate...layer after layer of stuff going on...complex......95 Points

1937 Caldwells Claret
From halve bottles.....believed to have been made by Dan Tyrrell.....a bit over the hill.......fruits pretty much dried up now and madeirised...........79 Points

1908 Yalumba Muscadelle
Deep coffee coloured....knockout nose of coffee and burnt toffee characters.....huge in the mouth....weighty and super-viscous...sweet and powerful, coffee, toffee, maple syrup, golden syrup and treacle...bloody fantastic.....be quick 24 litres left ........98+ Points

Matau,

What do you do in the wine industry?

Between this post and the Mouton you are obviously getting to try some great/interesting wines. Besides most of the Mouton's which I have tried I know I will never have the opportunity to try many of the Autrailian wines mentioned. I do love HOG and 'am disappointed to hear the 1978 is not as great as others I have tried since it is a birthyear wine I was interested in trying. Thanks for the notes.

As far as I know the 1908 Yalumba is not available commercially........I think they just drag it out on special occasions....It's like the Seppelt 100 year old Para Port(Parker just gave it 100)....they have six litres left.....so these wines are as rare as rockinghorse-poo............I'm off to the winery in the Barossa next week so I'll try to find out.

Quite a special tasting......It is put on by Robert Hill-Smith from Yalumba wines every five years....he just pulls out all these great wines from his cellar and invites around 50 people(wine writers, wine-makers, retail and sommeliers from around the country) along to a tasting and lunch.....amazing generosity.....just a celebration of wine..

At lunch you can grab whatever bottles you'd like to drink with lunch....our table had a Penfolds Bin 60A, '82 Mouton, 71 Gaja Barbaresco, 93 DRC Montrachet and the 1908 Yalumba.........then off to a nearby pub to re-calibrate the palates with a few beers.

The last two tastings have been MC'd by James Halliday but Len Evans had the duties this time around......he is hilarious.........Len said that this sort of tasting happens nowhere else in the world and that five years is to long and we should have them every two weeks

Cheers

Dave
