| 1863 Barbeito Madeira Boal - Portugal, Madeira (12/28/2005) Tremendous nose of caramel, toffee and brown sugar that enveloped the table and was obvious two feet away. Clear brown color. Smooth palate, medium-full body with a marked tartness like a granny smith apple. Very smooth and a long finish. (90 pts.) | | | http://www.sweetandsourspectator.org |

| If you get a chance, try the 1863 Malvasia by Barbeito. Amazing stuff.

| They didn't have that one JB. They did have the 1875 Malvasia though. They also had an 1834 (forget which one exactly). | | | |

I think 2005 - 1863 = 142, at least with the math I was taught. We had this atBacar in San Francisco.

| I've had the 1875 also. Killer. The acidity of these wines are truly freaks of nature. The acidity must have been torturous when these wines were young. I'm an old Madeira whore, and proud of it.

| Yes, the acidity was pretty insane on this wine. If you drink this stuff frequently I hope the enamel on your teeth is all there as otherwise your teeth will get etched. | | | |

It is also worth noting that this was $80 a glass and we split it. Antique Wine Co. in Sonoma is selling this for about $400 a bottle. | | | http://www.sweetandsourspectator.org

| That would be The Rare Wine Company in Sonoma. According to wine-searcher.com the cost is $350. | | | |

| The 1863 Barbeito is good, but the 1834 Barbeito Bual or was it the Malmsey, is the best Madeira that I have drunk. I have one lone bottle left of 1845 Cossart Godon Bual Solera, and it was only $75 in the early 1990's.
The bright lemony acidity is truly something to behold in these ancient wines. I also find it fascinating that these wines are products of white grapes.
