I made Osso Bucco (futronic's great recipe) and mushroom risotto this weekend and decided to open a very nice wine to celebrate my big foray into Italian cooking. The first night I opened a Sandrone Barolo and the second night with leftovers, had a Super-Tuscan. Here are my notes:

Sandrone 1998 Barolo Le Vigne ($80)

I opened this bottle around 3 pm without any decanting and had most of the bottle about 6 hours later. A brilliant ruby color with a little bit of brownish tinges on the edges. Layers of dark cherries on the nose with hints of cinnamon, brown sugar and other spices packed in tightly. The aromatics were very complex and pleasing, but kind of muted - like listening to great music on the stereo at a very-low volume. Medium-bodied, it is very pure in flavor and texture. Comparisons to a very fine Burgundy would be appropriate as it has all the silkiness and elegance of a great Pinot Noir. I caught this wine in it's adolescence, but it shows great promise for the future. 91 points now, but surely a higher score a few years down the road. I'm opening my next bottle in 2007.

Ananda 2001 Rosso di Toscana ($30)

I was told that this is a new Super-Tuscan made by the winemaker from Tignanello. 70% Sangiovese with 30% Merlot (or Cabernet, I forget which). Dark ruby color with a purple-ish tinge. Aromas of black cherries along with very fine dark cholocate jump from the glass. On the palate, a smooth-textured and fruit-driven wine with medium body. Would like more complexity and a longer finish, as it is a little primary right now. Good with food, but about $10 over-priced at $30. 88 points.

I don't know what the 1998 Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo will be going for when it's released in Ontario, but if the previous vintage was any indication - it'll be a lot. The 1997 Le Vigne sold for $249CAD a bottle. The LCBO can stuff it at that price.

Oh yea... the Sandrone Le vigne is awesome.... but..... wow.. really needs time... hours of decanting if you open one now.

Agreed.

Rev brought the '98 Sandrone Le Vigne to dinner quite a while ago and it was spectactular. It changed my views on Barolo in general to the point that I now look to add some to my cellar.

Incredible stuff.

(thanks again Rev)! ---- have any more?

Well yes... yes I do... but the two left have been purposely lost in the back of my cellar! :-) I also have the Cannubi Boschis Barolo from Sandrone.. .same year. Supposed to be even better.... but I have only one. :-(

Glad you liked it STW. :-)

  • 1998 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (2/8/2008)
Ruby colored with hints of bricking - I regretted opening this bottle because it was sort of in the in-between stage where the youthful exuberance has left and the mellow complexity has not yet set in. Aromatically, it was starting to show some knockout perfumed aromas - on the palate however it was tight and unyielding. A combination of decanting and consuming over two days made it slightly easier to consume, but it was still difficult to coax out the wine. Another 3 years of development should be good for this wine to soften and open up.
