Tasted last night at Dinner w/Doc at Olivetto:

Wow, a 1977 Chianti that is holding up this well?!? Amazingly good color, a light red with very little bricking. The nose on is somewhat prunish/port-ish, and there is a very slight chemical aroma (at first, it did blow off however), along with black fruits and earth. On the palate there is an amazing amount of fruit, and even more amazing – surprisingly firm tannins! Plenty of acidity, nicely balanced, if it weren’t for the port-ish nose I would say this wine still had a time to go. What a treat, 88 points, drink now.

This wine was surprising for its age. Chiantis are not the most well known for their aging potential. The fruit was in its twilight stages, but there was alot of complexity on the finish. Lots of brown bricking in color. Thanks to SFWine for bringing this one. 87 pts.

Interesting b/c this was the oldest Chianti that I have had. It held up for the first hour. Then, I thought it died out the last 1.5 hours. In the first 1 hour, it was full of old earth, mushrooms, and brick. Some good fruit left. Enjoyable and educational. Drink up..87 pts.
