If you grew up (oenelogically-speaking, of course) believing that Bolla Soave was the archetypal Soave, and that these wines are only tasteless, high-acid accompaniments to cut through greasy appetizers at the local Italian eatery, then this will come as a surprise to you, as it did to me. Served blind, I was convinced that this was a young white Burgundy, perhaps from a good producer in the Macon. Imagine my shock when this was revealed:

2001 Suavia Monte Carbonare Soave Classico Superiore -- a beautiful golden-yellow color; nose of minerals and stones, with floral peach and honey (reminiscent of some of Thevenet's riper Macons); full-bodied and powerful in the mouth, with apple, peach, smoke, honey, lavender flavors; lower in acidity than any other Soave I've ever had, but enough to carry the fruit to a lip-smacking long finish; great balance of fruit and acid. Feels a bit tight; may be even more expansive in a few months or a year. Label states 100% Garganega, which I think is atypical for Soave. This is a wine that's hard to resist. App. 91-2 pts.

This costs around C$27, or about double the price of most Soaves here, and well worth it. A welcome change from Chardonay or Sauvignon Blanc this summer.
