  • 2003 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (11/25/2007)
Very dark purple color; Raspberry and spice flavors in a big frame. Nice silky texture. As others note it was internationally styled with only the acidity pointing to its Italian origin. Good wine with potential for improvement. [Decanted 30 minutes with good results; Drinking well now but can continue to hold] (90 pts.)

... wondering about the hot 2003 year and its impact on Italian merlot. I have a 6 pack of 03 Lamaoine waiting for me at the store...?

In this wine I did not find any overripe characteristics. Haven't tried any of the other 2003 Italian merlots. Although it was hot everywhere in Europe in 2003 the wines are varied based on when they harvested, microclimates, etc.

I expected that the 2003 Piedmont wines would be very ripe and alcoholic and that wasn't the case. If anything the wines tasted diluted - maybe something they were doing to tone down the alcohol and jamminess.
