| UPDATE:
I went to the Tre Vigne dinner in Basking Ridge. It was semi-hosted by Gary's Wine and a distributor of Sicilian wines. Ran $59, which is normally on the cheaper side... but I think I know why.
In anycase, Four Corvo wines were served, One white and three reds.
The dishes were all Sicilian in nature, and the only one I really thought was good, was the salad, which consisted only of Orange slices, red onion slices, mixed into a very nice Sicilian olive oil, with salt and pepper on top. The olive oil really did a great job with the red onion, and the orange gave it a really great taste. I was surprised.
Back to the wines. Took me half an hour to find the website, but here it is:
http://www.vinicorvo.it/products.html
Corvo 2001 Bianco -- Made from made from Inzolia, Catarratto and Grecanico grapes (says their website) so I didn't really know what to expect. Tasted like a Chardonnay actually, but a very firm structure with a over abundant crispness to it. It was overpowering. Besides it being super crisp, this was a "good" wine. Rev rates it: 81
Corvo 2000 Rosso -- The distributor talked about this as being their basic every day red. Made from three different grapes, this was a fairly ripe, yet light to medium bodied wine with a light berry nose that continued onto the palate. Nothing special, but nothing wrong with it either. Ripe, dark fruit (if there is such a thing) with definite earthy/mineral flavors. A nice drinking, smooth, light wine, ready to drink. Rev rates it: 83.
Corvo 1999 Terre D'Agala -- I liked this one the best. Light berry nose. Ripe berry and cherry on the palate, lots of minerally earth, definite oaky presence with some spice.. Super smooth... but with some moderately sticky tannins. Rev rates it: 86.
Corvo 1993 Duca Enrico -- This was their pride and joy it seemed, but I really didn't like it nearly as much as the Terre D'Agala. Way to ripe, especially for a wine made in 1993. Lots of tannins and acidity still as well. Surprising in fact.... as it's just a medium bodied, bright ruby red wine. Not a hint of age showing in this wine. I almost feel duped! hehe Anyhow, just way to ripe for me, red rasberry, mineral, spices, short finish, oaky. Rev rates it: 82
The table I was at pretty much agreed with these findings... though I tended to lead the discussion, which was a first. | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... | |
