This was a good visit to a rather awesome winery site on the side of a very large hill. The winery was actually rounded as they had tunneled out from their original holdings as far as they could until they reached the side of the hill. There was a one lane road directly on the other side of the outside walls with some windows present for light. It was one of the most physically impressive facilities that we visited.   They had a large patio with a view of the Castello at Serralunga. There has been five generations of Viettis making wine. They claimed they were one of the first wineries to export to the USA. Alfredo Vietti (75 years old) visited with us and was the first winemaker at Vietti to do single vineyard vinification. Their annual production is 200-220k bottles per year of which 85K are the white wines - Arneis and Moscato.  Great view from their balcony of Serralunga on the hill.ÂThis family has had five generations of winemakers.  Elena, the wife of the owner, was our host.ÂThey were one of the first Piedmont wineries to export to the USA.   200-220k bottles produced.Â85K of whites produced – Arneis & Moscato.  Our group was impressed with the wines at this visit and purchased wines.  2006 Vietti Roero Arneis - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero DOC (5/11/2007) Tasted at the winery; Light gold in color; lemon aromas and flavors; good balance and crisp finish; Not quite as oily in texture as some of the other Arneis' we tried; a buy at a good price (88 pts.)2005 Vietti Barbera d'Alba Tre Vigne - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba (5/11/2007) Tasted at the winery; Dark ruby in color; Kirsche aromas and flavors along with an earthy note; Balance with an acidic note on the finish typical of young Barbera. Quite nice - I would buy this at a good price. (88 pts.) 2003 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (5/11/2007) Tasted at the winery; Clear garnet in color with raspberry and iron aromas and flavors. Again an earthy note throughout. Good structure but with a lack of focus we were finding with the 2003 Barolos that we tasted. Probably overpriced for the quality at €55 from the winery.
