We met with the proprietor, Massimo Martinelli. This was another very large winery on the side of the hill. It was interesting in that they had grass planted on the roof of the winery in an attempt to keep the temps down. They had a very bright Northern exposure. They had an interesting way (marketing slime) to characterize recent vintages for their wines: Good, better, best – Maestro (best) – 96, 97, 99, 00, 01 Elegante (better) – 95, 98, 03 Overall I wasn’t impressed with the flavor profiles of these wines. There was just too much oak involved. I wouldn't purchase any of these at any price. 2006 Renato Ratti Dolcetto d'Alba Colombe - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba (5/7/2007) Tasted at the winery; Clear purple in color; Lots of fresh cherries on the nose but also a wallop of oak; Tart finish. €7 Euro at the winery. (86 pts.)- 2006 Renato Ratti Barbera d'Alba Torriglione - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba (5/7/2007)
Tasted at the winery; Again lots of oak; barrique only used in this wine. €9 from the winery. (86 pts.) - 2004 Renato Ratti Monferrato Villa Pattono - Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato (5/7/2007)
Tasted at the winery; Clear purple color; 20% cab, 60% Barbera, 20% merlot; just when I thought the wines couldn’t get much oakier they brought this one out. €15 from the winery. (85 pts.)
2003 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (5/7/2007) Tasted at the winery; A Barolo with a green herbal streak, anise and tar flavors. Not good. Time will probably not help the green streak in this wine. €25 from the winery. (82 pts.)
