| Quite orange in color, turning light ruby red at the core, and completely translucent throughout (this wine has been standing for some weeks), the color conveys the sense of a delicate wine, and the nose confirms just that. Aromatically this wine is shy, but absolutely alluring. Smelling very much like a well aged Burgundy, we have aromas smoke, earth, leather, roses, and sweet cherries. Light, elegant, and delicate on the palate, with the silky texture only age can offer. Tannins are mostly resolved but still play a minor roll, acidity is in place, and the wine pulls a hat trick of an almost animistic character as it goes into a medium long finish. A lovely wine, far surpassing my expectations for a 42 year old Chianti! If you need points, I'd go 92-93, but it is tough judging these old wines on such a scale! | | | 2008: the end of an error |
