| My first Spanna!
The color is a still quite dark, opaque ruby with only little browning to the edge. On the nose the wine shows quite young! Vibrant and firm, with notes of black cherries, dark plum, tar, and nice earthy and (light) floral accents. On the palate I am struck by the still very prominent tannins! The wine has a firmly tannic grip, good acidity, black fruits, and a tannic finish.
I like this, but it is completely unlike any other of the old N. Italian wines I have opened thus far. I cannot say it holds a great deal of complexity, but it is very interesting nonetheless. I'd venture a guess that this wine could go another 20 years, but question what will be left once these tannins finally subside? It would be interesting to find out! (alas, the surprisingly stubby cork, though in good condition for this bottle, is hard to imagine holding another 5, more less 20 years). | | | 2008: the end of an error |
