Opaque purple, medium nose of chocolate covered cherry, plums, smoke, saddle leather and spice. Medium plus body, intensity and acidity. A wine that commands your palates attention. Balanced. 91pts

I had a bottle of this about 2 months ago and it was quite oaky - seemed much more than the previous vintages. But I think when the oak tones down a bit in the future, it'll be much better IMHO.

I actually prefered the basic bottling in '03. I found this to be good, but, like jaimetown, quite oaky -- this almost reminded me of an Aussie [shudders]. Anyway, I thought this was good but too much licorice. I think I rated it 90 or 91.

I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland.

I have not had any luck with this wine. All the bottles I have had have possessed a strong roasted fruit characteristic that I haven't found in previous vintages. Same with a 2004 Bionzo (Asti) from a different store. I think I am done with Spinetta Barberas...

The various La Spinetta Barberas have always been a mainstay for me - priced well - drank great - always. My objection of late has been more the pricing then any noted quality decline per se - but perhaps I am finding them less exciting of late - and I certainly am not going out of my way to look for them anymore as I used to (same goes for their Nebbiolo wines that I used to seek out - again its the price really that most deters me.
