| 1998 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia -- an infant, but already very impressive; inky dark, impenetrable; needs over half an hour to start showing a lot of dark fruit aromas, some earthiness and spice; this is deep and brooding stuff, wonderful to sip slowly over a few hours, currant, blackberry, dark chocolate, mushroom, cedar flavours show up over time, all carried on lip-smacking acidity in a fairly dense package; very long finish with powerful tannins but still lots of fruit. In the 95-98 pts. range. I'm already excited to try this again in 5-10 years. A real head-turner. | | |

| Nice report. I have these buried very deep in the cellar. Sounds like they need to stay there. | | | |

| "....these..."? Sometimes a plural pronoun can sound so damn wonderful!
Absolutely, leave them for years. | | | |

| "These" is a small amount. I want to do a 1998 "AIA" tasting at some point - Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Come down and visit and consider it done. | | | |

If the price to join the party is one each of the 98 AIA's, I have enough for my ticket!

| Well I decided to bring my lone bottle of '98 Sassicaia to Italy this past week and boy was I glad I did. The '98 is a wine for the purist cab lover who understands and appreciates what fine winemaking, good use of oak without being overbearing and juicy tannin laced fruit can become in the right hands. This wine was bought on release in Italy and was stored at 55 degrees since then.
The main flavors of currants, plums and chocolate infused cranberries were laced with juicy food loving acidity. (served with a 12oz hand selected filet cooked medium) The finish lasted for over 40 seconds and gained in complexity as the night progressed. This wine was consumed over 2.5 hours. I wish I could I could find more of this wine at the price I paid on release ($107). This is a wine that can be enjoyed now with some air and over the next 6-9 yrs. 96pts. Bravo.
