$69CAD

Deep garnet to rim. Nose of briar, chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Nice red fruit, integrated tannin. Dry on the finish. 87 points.

FWIW, here are my tasting notes on this wine, tasted on October 29, 2002.

Decanted 1 hour before serving in Spiegelau Bordeaux style glasses.

Dark, slightly dusty, garnet color in the glass.

An almost smoky smell of fresh berries on the nose with just a hint of spiceness. Kept picking up odd smells for this varietal like vanilla and cinnamon.

Fruit forward flavors of berries, especially strawberry, with some cherry on the mid-palate. Had an almost earthy finish over a thin layer of licorice.

Fairly evenly balanced wine that left me just a little puzzled on the finish. Couldn't place it after all of the fruit on the front.

I would peg this wine between 89-91 points right now. Drink 2003 through maybe 2007. Very approachable now with some decanting.

As a side note: I enjoyed this wine more than the 1997 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino.

I don't know what it was, but I was expecting more. I'm sure it didn't help that I had the '95 Poggio All'Oro right before it. I definitely won't be buying any, especially at that price.

What is the exchange rate right now? I think I dropped $45.00 U.S. a bottle on the two I purchased...and that was at COSTCO.

$1USD = $1.38152CAD, so the $45USD you spent on the Caparzo is about $62CAD.

Tasted at theFebruary BAWE Tuscan event...

Very nice nose of cherries, earth, and floral notes, this is balanced and focused, but very young, with hard unforgiving tannins that just won’t yield. Seems to have tremendous potential, but difficult to enjoy today.

Drinking beautifully right now. Lovely ruby red, aromas of dark ripe fruits, soft earthiness. After decanting for several hours, very well-balanced, tannins seem to be 'in check'.
