| Purchased recently directly from Italy, for what I consider the ridiculously good price of $75. This wine was said to be stored properly all these years - and the condition of the bottle certainly supports the claim, with a very good fill, good label and foil condition, and a solid cork which came out almost too easily and was saturated only a bit more than half way up - amazing.
The first, and most obviously thing one notices about this wine is the color - or, more appropriately, the lack thereof - it is the color approximately of a light, muddled Rose. On the nose the wine definitely shows some maderized notes, and not a lot of fruit or complexity, but on the palate is where it really shined, with almost stunning sweetness, velvety texture, notes of cherry and earth, a bit of funk, and wonderful nuance. The are no tannins whatsoever here, and certainly the wine is in decline at this point, but still incredibly interesting. Finishes short and pleasing, as the wine evolved in the glass the maderized notes amplified - but were in no way disagreeable. The oldest Italian I have ever experienced, and a real treat! I have no idea how I would assign a score to this wine, it being a unique experience unto itself. | | | |
