Classified as a "Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore DOC", located in Calabria, Italy (right in the "heel of the boot"). Made from Gaglioppo grapes. Ronco dei Quattroventi ("Hill of the Fourwinds") is from their best vineyard. Purchased at Sam's for $28, after sipping it at Italian Night a couple months ago. Brick red color. Funky compost, pine needle, and tobacco aromas. On its own, this wine was rough and brawny, full of aggressive tannins and dried leathery fruit. Not the kind of wine you'd want to meet in a dark alley. But with the Thanksgiving ham (my wife's family does not like turkey ), this wine turned from clumsy oaf to debonair dance partner. The cloves and smokiness of the ham seemed to focus the Ronco into a pleasant but strong-willed accompaniment. The finish was long and somewhat hot, so I think I'll hold my remaining bottle for 3 years and see what happens with time. 88P, mainly on the intriguing alchemy of the food pairing. Worth a try if you're into lab experiments. Note: my wife's family (relatively inexperienced wine drinkers) really loved this wine, calling it "complex" and "powerful". I also brought a very nice fruity zin ('99 Elyse Sierra Foothills), that was not received nearly as well. Cheers, Otis

I like this wine, it's a bit aggressive, you're right, but it has a great personality, a few years will definitely be of benefit. Incredible the price you pay in the US, it goes for 10€ wholesale here, i.e. about 14 retail.
